DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENT IN CRABBE’S LOT TO BEGIN ON THURSDAY

Monday, October 15 – Drainage improvement in Crabbe Lot, the area of Road Town commonly known as The Ghetto, will begin this Thursday with cleaning of the existing drainage structures.

The project is part of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean State’s (OECS) Disaster and Risk Reduction Programme (DRRP).

The work will commence in the Long Bush area near Sonny’s Laundromat and progress to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church and into Crabbe Lot.  Cleaning will also take place in the Joe’s Hill drain commencing from the Methodist Manse Road, to the drain in Crabbe Lot.

This project is a joint effort between the OECS, the Department of Disaster Management and the Ministry of Communications and Works.

As a participating member of the OECS, the British Virgin Islands was selected for implementation of the community risk component of the OECS Secretariat’s DRRP.  The activities of the programme are focused on communities and households that are vulnerable to natural hazards such as landslides and floods.

The Ministry held a town meeting in Crabbe’s Lot on September 10 to explain the project to residents in the area and several follow-up site visits were held to identify the areas that are more susceptible to flooding.

Ministry officials said that after listening to the populace of the area, new plans were designed to include the areas identified as a result of the meeting, and now we are ready to begin with the work.

One of the positive aspects of the project is that it involves citizen participation.  The cleaning of the drains, which encompasses some 1,493 feet, will be carried out by residents of the area, thus providing economic opportunities.

The Ministry of Communications and Works is dedicated to providing safe, efficient and affordable infrastructural services to enhance community life and the economic growth within the Territory.
