“This is the day that we have been looking forward to, the day we install the first bus stop for the new bus service which will come into being as soon as we are able to issue franchises to people who have an interest in establishing this bus service,”  Minister Fraser said during his brief remarks.

The minister further stated that, “Public transportation is something that every country should have; it is what moves people throughout the community.” Honourable Fraser expects over one hundred more bus stops will be erected over the next few weeks throughout the Territory.

Acting Deputy Secretary Mrs. Myrna Ferdinand was present and gave brief remarks. “I am pleased to be here today to watch the first bus stop sign being erected as we implement our national transportation bus system in the BVI.”

Mrs. Ferdinand also said that Phase II of the project will see the construction of bus sheds.  “In Phase II of the project, new bus sheds will be erected and the dilapidated ones will be replaced,” Mrs. Ferdinand noted. Acting Permanent Secretary Mr. Julian Willock chaired the brief ceremony.
The community bus service was introduced with the implementation of the 2009 Road Traffic Regulations.  It will operate through franchises Government will grant to eligible transport operators. The Government sees this new service as an answer to the needs of those travellers who desire an affordable, clean and reliable transportation system throughout Tortola.
